For years, social media has become a powerful tool for connection, entertainment and public conversations. However, for some public figures, the same platforms have also become a space where personal attacks, rumors and harassment can spread rapidly. In Rwanda, the case involving renowned female DJ Sonia Kayitesi, popularly known as DJ Sonia, has brought renewed attention to the growing debate around digital responsibility and protection of individuals online.

DJ Sonia recently made headlines after deciding to forgive two individuals who had been under investigation in a case related to allegations of defamation, online harassment and the misuse of digital platforms. The decision marked a new chapter in a dispute that she says has affected her life and career for several years.

The two individuals who benefited from her decision are journalist Pizzo, founder of Max TV, and social media personality Kazungu Kaboss. According to reports, both had been in the custody of the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) before DJ Sonia chose to withdraw her complaint against them.

Following his release, Kazungu Kaboss publicly thanked DJ Sonia for granting him forgiveness, acknowledging the decision that allowed him to regain his freedom while the broader case continues.

However, the forgiveness granted to the two individuals does not bring the entire matter to an end. Information surrounding the case indicates that several other people remain part of the investigation, with authorities continuing to examine allegations raised by DJ Sonia

DJ Sonia has explained that her struggle did not begin recently. She says she has spent nearly four years dealing with what she describes as repeated online attacks, including accusations, rumors and content that she believes damaged her reputation.

According to her statements, she repeatedly sought help from relevant authorities between 2023 and 2026, reporting different incidents that she believed were connected to online harassment.

For a long time, DJ Sonia kept the matter private, choosing to handle it through official channels. However, she later decided to speak publicly after feeling that the situation had escalated and that silence was no longer an option.

She explained that she wanted people to understand the challenges she had been facing behind the scenes, especially as public conversations about her were spreading across social media platforms.

From Social Media Discussions to Legal Action

As a public figure, DJ Sonia has often been in the spotlight due to her career in entertainment. Like many celebrities, information about her can quickly reach thousands of people through social media, whether it is accurate or based on speculation.

The complaint she filed through her lawyer, Me Jean Paul Ibambe, involved allegations connected to cyber harassment, spreading false information and other forms of digital abuse.

The case highlights a growing challenge faced by celebrities, influencers and public personalities worldwide: the difficulty of protecting personal reputation in an era where information can spread instantly.

Unlike traditional media, where editorial processes often exist before publication, social media allows anyone to share content immediately, creating both opportunities and risks.

DJ Sonia’s Role in Rwanda’s Entertainment Industry

Beyond the legal case, DJ Sonia remains recognized as one of the women who helped reshape Rwanda’s DJ industry.

At a time when professional DJing was largely dominated by men, she built her name through performances, entertainment events and her ability to connect with audiences.

Her success has made her one of the recognizable female figures in Rwanda’s entertainment scene, while also placing her under greater public attention.

The recent case has therefore become more than a personal dispute; it has become part of a wider discussion about how society treats public figures online and how digital platforms should be used responsibly.

The situation involving DJ Sonia comes at a time when Rwanda continues to address challenges linked to online behavior.

Authorities have repeatedly warned social media users against spreading false information, engaging in cyber harassment or using digital platforms to harm others.

Under Rwanda’s cybercrime laws, offenses involving harassment through digital technology, including cyberstalking, can lead to criminal penalties such as imprisonment and fines.

The legal framework is designed to balance freedom of expression with the need to protect individuals from abuse, intimidation and deliberate attacks on their dignity.
