Visit Rwanda emerged from Rwanda’s long journey of rebuilding and redefining itself after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Rwanda focused on restoring peace, security, and national unity. As the country stabilized, the government realized that Rwanda needed not only economic recovery but also a new international image. Around the early 2000s, tourism began to grow, especially through conservation efforts in places such as Volcanoes National Park, famous for mountain gorillas. By 2005, tourism had become one of Rwanda’s major sources of foreign income, encouraging the country to invest more in branding and international promotion.
Development of visit Rwanda (2010–2017)
Between 2010 and 2017, the government, through Rwanda Development Board, officially strengthened the Visit Rwanda campaign as part of a broader strategy to promote tourism, investment, culture, and international conferences. During this period, Kigali developed into a modern conference hub, luxury hotels were built, and Rwanda increasingly hosted global meetings and events. The annual Kwita Izina ceremony also gained international recognition, symbolizing Rwanda’s commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism. The campaign aimed to change how the world viewed Rwanda — from a country remembered mainly for tragedy to one recognized for beauty, safety, and opportunity.
Global Recognition Through Sports (2018)
In 2018, Visit Rwanda gained worldwide attention after Rwanda signed a sponsorship deal with Arsenal F.C.. The words “Visit Rwanda” appeared on the club’s sleeves and inside Emirates Stadium, exposing millions of football fans to Rwanda’s tourism brand. This partnership sparked international debate. Supporters argued that it successfully promoted Rwanda’s image and attracted tourism and investment, while critics questioned the cost and priorities of such sponsorships. Nevertheless, the campaign significantly increased Rwanda’s global visibility.
Expansion and International Growth (2019–2022)
From 2019 onward, Visit Rwanda expanded further through partnerships with Paris Saint-Germain F.C. and later Atlético Madrid. Rwanda also continued promoting its natural attractions, including Akagera National Park, known for wildlife safaris, and Nyungwe National Park, famous for rainforest tourism and canopy walks. Although the COVID-19 pandemic slowed global tourism between 2020 and 2021, Rwanda continued marketing itself internationally through media and digital campaigns.
